Dachshund Breed Information
Dachshunds are a friendly and spirited breed, easily recognized by their low-sitting silhouette and elongated body. Typically measuring 8-9 inches in height for standard sizes and weighing between 16-32 pounds, or 5-6 inches tall and under 11 pounds for miniatures, these dogs have a lifespan of 12-16 years. Their coats come in three varieties—smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired—and a range of colors, including black, tan, chocolate, cream, and red, complemented by various markings such as sable, brindle, and dapple. Known for their affectionate nature, Dachshunds are generally good with children and get along well with other dogs, but their lively personalities may sometimes lead to mischief.
Despite their small size, Dachshunds possess a bold and adventurous spirit, coupled with intelligence and vigilance, making them effective watchdogs with a distinct, loud bark. They require moderate exercise, such as two short walks daily, to maintain their health, but owners must take care to prevent injuries to their long backs by avoiding jumping from furniture or climbing stairs. Training and socialization are essential, as Dachshunds can be stubborn, so consistent positive reinforcement is key to raising well-adjusted adults. Additionally, obesity is a serious concern for this breed, as excess weight can exacerbate back problems. Careful management of their diet, along with limited treats and table scraps, is crucial to ensuring their well-being. With proper care and attention, Dachshunds can thrive as loving and loyal companions.

Dachshunds come in a variety of colors and patterns. The solid colors of Dachshunds are red, cream, black and tan, chocolate and tan, blue and tan, and Isabella and tan. These colors that have tan can also have cream coloring. The patterns that Dachshund puppies come in are dapple, double dapple, (we do not breed double dapples here) brindle, sable, and piebald. Answering Your Dachshund Questions
Yes, Dachshunds can be excellent family dogs. They are known for their playful, clever, and courageous nature. They form strong bonds with their families and are great companions. However, due to their background as hunters, they can be a bit stubborn, so early socialization and training are key.
Despite their small size, Dachshunds have a surprising amount of energy. They require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. A couple of moderate walks per day and some playtime are usually sufficient. It's important to avoid activities that strain their long back, such as jumping from high places.
The main difference between a mini and a standard Dachshund is their size. A standard Dachshund typically weighs between 16 and 32 pounds, while a miniature Dachshund weighs 11 pounds or under. Both have the same spirited personality and come in the same coat varieties (smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired).
